Abstract

ABSTRACT

Aim: The purpose of this study is to examine sports consumers' attitudes toward the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system within the framework of demographic variables, thereby revealing the impact of technology-based referee interventions on the football experience. The VAR system, implemented in recent years to ensure fairness in football matches, has been met with both positive and negative reactions from the football community, affecting fundamental elements such as spectator enjoyment, game flow, and the perception of fairness. In this context, the study was conducted to understand sports consumers' attitudes toward VAR technology and to analyze whether these attitudes differ based on demographic variables such as age, gender, athletic background, and fan affiliation.

Material and Method: The research was conducted using a quantitative method within the framework of a descriptive survey model, and the Attitude Scale Towards VAR Application in Turkish Football was used as the data collection tool. Data were collected via a survey from 229 sports consumers residing in Rize province, and the data was analyzed using the SPSS 27.0 program.

Results: The analysis revealed that variables such as gender, athletic background, and favorite team did not create a statistically significant difference in attitudes toward VAR (p>0.05). In contrast, the age variable showed significant differences in the sub-dimensions of viewing enjoyment, ensuring fairness, and overall attitude (p<0.05). The findings reveal that younger participants have a more positive attitude towards the VAR system, while individuals in the older age group believe that the VAR application damages the natural flow of football.

Conclusion: The results of the study offer important insights for sports management, football federations, and broadcasters. The need to present technological applications in a manner appropriate to the nature of football and to develop effective communication strategies that appeal to different age groups is highlighted.
