Abstract

ABSTRACT

Aim: The aim of this study was to examine the relationships between the sub-dimensions of university students' social media usage motivations and communication apprehension, and to determine the predictive power of these motivational dimensions on communication apprehension.

Material and Method: This quantitative study was conducted using a relational survey design. The study sample consisted of 300 university students enrolled at Adıyaman University and selected through convenience sampling. Data were collected using a Personal Information Form, the Social Network Usage Purposes Scale (SAKAÖ), and the Personal Report of Communication Apprehension Scale (PRCA-24). Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation analysis, independent samples t-test, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), and multiple linear regression analyses were performed to analyze the data.

Results: Pearson correlation analysis revealed weak but statistically significant positive relationships between communication apprehension and the Initiating Communication and Content Sharing sub-dimensions. Multiple linear regression analysis further demonstrated that only Initiating Communication) and Contet Sharing significantly predicted communication apprehension, whereas the remaining social media usage motivation sub-dimensions were not significant predictors. The regression model explained 7.7% of the variance in communication apprehension. Furthermore, communication apprehension did not differ significantly according to gender, faculty type, or daily social media usage duration.

Conclusion: The findings suggest that communication apprehension is related more closely to specific motivational dimensions underlying social media engagement rather than the overall duration or intensity of use. In particular, motivations concerning initiating communication and sharing content displayed notable associations with communication apprehension levels. Although the explained variance remains modest, these results indicate that motivation-based frameworks may offer a complementary and useful theoretical perspective for examining digital communication patterns compared to approaches centered solely on the quantity of use.
